Harwell F. Smith Ph.D.
Dr. Smith graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1978. His practice of clinical psychology over 30 years in outpatient and inpatient settings focuses on understanding the patient's current distress. Once Dr. Smith understands how you see your problem, the next step is to help you see things in a way that empowers you to change the troubling situation. It is the patient who generates the cure. As an experienced and board certified clinical psychologist, Dr. Smith aids you in resolving your own internal and interpersonal challenges with support and insight. Relief of the sense of crisis usually occurs within the first 6 sessions of treatment. The psychotherapy session typically lasts 50 minutes and meetings are once or twice a week during the crisis resolution phase.
If medication appears warranted, Dr. Smith communicates with your family doctor or arranges an appointment with a psychiatrist, depending on how you choose to handle it. Feeling at ease with your counselor is essential to effective treatment. Dr.Smith schedules his own appointments. You're encouraged to call him and ask questions to satisfy yourself that you'll be comfortable with him. If you want to schedule at the end of that call you can do so, or you can call back later.
